Epidemiology and Disease Pathophysiology: Thalassaemia
In this course, Ali Taher, MD provides clinicians with a complete overview of the etiology and clinical features of β-thalassaemia, including β-thalassaemia major and β-thalassaemia intermedia. Additionally, he discusses the development of iron overload and the current treatment options, including iron chelation therapy, in order to provide clinicians with state-of the-science options to improve their patients' outcomes.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Distinguish ß-thalassaemia major (TM) and ß-thalassaemia intermedia (TI) with respect to molecular basis and clinical presentation and features in order to improve diagnosis and management.
- Explain the development, consequences, and treatment of iron overload in patients with ß-thalassaemia in order to improve patient outcomes.
