Iron Chelation Basics
Iron chelation therapy offers an alternative to phlebotomy in treating iron overload. Goals and mechanisms of chelation therapy, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the three available iron chelators—desferrioxamine, deferiprone, and deferasirox—will be discussed in this webcast.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Understand the principles and limitations of chelation therapy in order to most effectively treat iron overload.
- Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and comparative advantages and disadvantages of desferrioxamine, deferiprone, and deferasirox to optimally individualize treatment to improve outcomes in patients requiring iron chelation therapy.
- Understand treatment strategies that minimize unwanted effects of available iron chelators to improve treatment acceptability, compliance, and outcomes in patients requiring iron chelation therapy.
