Indications for Successful Iron Overload Treatments and Monitoring: Sickle Cell Disease

Patients with sickle cell anaemia face serious acute and chronic disease sequelae, many of which can be alleviated or prevented by blood transfusions. The benefit of transfusion therapy comes with a risk, however. Each unit of blood transfused increases the patient’s total iron load. Join Dr. Mariane de Montalembert as she discusses the problem of iron overload in patients with sickle cell disease and offers expert guidance on maintaining iron balance through safe and effective use of chelating agents.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Based on the indications for episodic and chronic transfusion in patients with sickle cell disease, determine the transfusional needs of patients in order to prevent serious complications associated with this disorder.
  • Apply knowledge of the techniques available to assess liver iron concentration, serum ferritin level, and cardiac iron to identify sickle cell patients in need of treatment for iron overload.
  • Based on an assessment of the efficacy, route of administration, and side-effect profiles of available iron chelating agents, customize treatment regimens to reduce/prevent iron overload in patients with sickle cell disease.
