Iron Chelation Basics


In this webcast, Dr. Taher, an expert in the treatment of thalassaemia, discusses goals and strategies of iron chelation therapy, focusing on new data on myocardial iron removal and providing an update on the long-term tolerability of iron chelators. The webcast also includes a discussion of the efficacy and tolerability of treatment with high-dose (>30 mg/kg) deferasirox.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

Learning Objectives


After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Based on an understanding of the goals of iron chelation and the properties of an ideal iron chelator, individualize iron chelation therapy for transfusion-dependent patients to reduce/prevent iron overload.
  • Based on recent clinical data with high-dose (>30 mg/kg) deferasirox, determine the most effective starting and maintenance doses to achieve optimal iron balance.
