Conversations With the Experts: Management of Iron Overload

In this video, a panel of four international experts discusses recent advances in understanding the pathophysiology of iron overload and progress in managing this condition in patients with thalassaemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, rare anaemias, sickle cell disease, and hereditary haemochromatosis. The discussion includes relevant reports presented at the 13th meeting of the European Haematology Association in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Apply up-to-date information on the pathophysiology of iron overload in patients with thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, to identify patients who are at risk of iron overload and should be considered candidates for iron chelation therapy.
  • Utilize an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of iron overload to determine the appropriate modality/pharmaceutical agent for iron chelation therapy in patients with thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, rare anaemias, sickle cell disease, and hereditary hemochromatosis.
  • Utilize an understanding of recent efficacy and safety trial data on the use of iron chelation therapy to develop treatment strategies that improve cardiac iron levels in patients with iron overload.
