Iron Overload Case Library, Case 4: Rash and Low T2* in a Paediatric Thalassaemia Patient


Management of paediatric patients with iron overload poses special challenges. In this case of a paediatric thalassaemia patient, deciding which iron chelation agent to use, determining the correct starting and maintenance dosages, and dealing effectively with side effects were crucial in achieving optimal outcome with reduced cardiac iron burden.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

  • Utilize appropriate dosage adjustments for paediatric thalassaemia patients to manage iron chelation treatment-related skin rash and reduce cardiac iron burden as measured by T2*.
