Update on Imaging: Detection of Iron in Liver and Heart

With the availability of new imaging techniques for measuring iron in the liver and heart, physicians now have the means to accurately assess their patients at risk for iron overload and to take the steps necessary to treat excess iron and prevent associated morbidity and mortality. In this webcast, Dr. St. Pierre discusses the measurement of liver iron concentration (LIC) and its impact on iron-induced complications and long-term prognosis, the relationship between LIC and cardiac iron, and noninvasive techniques, including biomagnetic liver susceptometry (SQUID) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), for measuring liver and cardiac iron, and presents suggestions for implementing these new methods in community institutions.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for haematologists, medical oncologists, haematology-oncology specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the screening, evaluation, treatment, and management of adults and children with iron overload, resulting from the spectrum of chronic iron overload diseases.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Apply an understanding of the appropriate use of MRI technology to assess and monitor liver and cardiac iron stores in patients at risk of iron overload in order to determine the need for chelation therapy and/or to adjust chelation regimens.
