Controversies in Iron Chelation in Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Clinicians attempting to manage iron overload in their patients with MDS are faced with a variety of guidelines that may reflect differing expert opinions. In this program, Dr. Giagounidis and Dr. Leitch discuss some of the controversies surrounding the importance and treatment of iron overload in this patient population, including whether iron overload has a significant impact on the health of the MDS patients, the possible benefits of iron chelation on survival, on decreasing AML transformation, and/or on improving hematologic parameters, and which MDS patients are appropriate for iron chelation therapy.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Assess the role of iron chelation therapy in improving survival in MDS patients identified as appropriate for treatment.
  • Based on recent guidelines for the treatment of iron overload in patients with MDS, identify your MDS patients who meet treatment criteria and are likely to benefit from iron chelation therapy.
